Ieva Januškevičiūtė will be the first Lithuanian athlete to participate in the Olympic women’s alpine skiing events. This is her second blog post for “The Road to Sochi.” Read part 1 here.
So I’m headed back to Italy. I got to spend about two weeks in Lithuania. I came back from Sweden on Christmas Eve. I spent Christmas Eve and Christmas Day with my family at my grandmother’s in Šilutė. The last thing I wanted to do was drive 300 kilometers to Šilutė after the long trip from Sweden, but I did really want to see my grandmother. It was fun to celebrate Christmas. I spent the rest of my vacation in Vilnius, it was good to meet up with old friends. But it was so sad to see Lithuania with almost no snow at Christmas. As a result, I wasn’t able to get any ski training in here.
Of course it’s always good to go back home, but it really knocks me out of sync. I want to get back into my training rhythm as soon as possible. In Vilnius, so I wouldn’t be sitting still, I went running, visited the Impuls Sport Club, and did balance workouts. That is really important part of a skier’s training—both on special balls, unstable surfaces, and on slacklines. I tried the the slackline once at a camp with my coaches. Later during training, I was hooked—it was a lot of fun. Before I would use the kind of rope that is for towing cars, the orange one. Later I bought a special rope made from nylon and polyester. It’s tighter, and because of it’s strength, it’s better for walking.
In Italy, I flew to Bergamo, with four bags, four pairs of skis, a huge suitcase, a large backpack, and a travel rucksack. Later with all this stuff I traveled from Bergamo to the main train station in Milan. And from there I took the train to Brixen with one change.
Before traveling, it’s important to ask, is it possible to travel with this much stuff. I seems it was possible, with a little help.
